Martina McBride surprised a group of homeless teens at the Covenant House homeless shelter in Newark, New Jersey.

McBride arrived at the shelter and gave the teens tickets to her sold-out concert with George Strait. The singer was there with volunteers from Team Martina, her global charity team, who handed out ice cream to the teens, played games and gave out prizes. “I want to thank Team Martina for all of this that they’ve done for y’all and I want to thank Covenant House for all that they do,” McBride told the crowd of teens. “It sounds like a really special place and we’re happy to be here today.”

Team Martina is powered by the volunteer hours of the singer’s fans, with the goal of fulfilling a need in any town where she performs. Volunteers raised $30,000 in Atlanta, Ga., to help begin construction on a new playground for inner city kids. In Nashville, the team raised $40,000 for a cancer research grant to help doctors at Vanderbilt University.

McBride’s upcoming album, ‘Everlasting‘ is due out on April 8. The ‘Little Bit of Rain’ singer is also preparing to release a cookbook this fall.
